EUC Extension Fails to Move in Senate

After weeks of discussion and procedural moves related to the proposed EUC extension the Senate could not come up with 60 votes on a version of legislation to move ahead on an extension. A major sticking point on the part of Republicans was the lack of provisions to pay for an extension.

Majority leader Reid at one point suggested that he would accept Republican amendments to “pay for” the extension, but later resisted the idea of an open amendment process on the floor.  There was some discussion of using UI/SSDI offsets to help pay for the extension, but agreement could not be reached.

Senator Reid at the conclusion of debate moved to reconsider the failed vote, leaving open the possibility that some other EUC extension bill could be considered quickly if there were agreement. At this point in the process an EUC extension appears unlikely.
